Film and Cultural Studies Scholar, Born 1957

Ashish Rajadhyaksha is a Senior Fellow of the Centre for the Study of Culture & Society (CSCS), Bangalore, and was the editor, with Paul Willemen, of the Encyclopaedia of Indian Cinema (British Film Institute and Oxford University Press, 1994). He is an active member of the editorial collective of the Journal of Arts and Ideas, and is a regular contributor to Framework and to Sight & Sound. He is author of Ritwik Ghatak: A Return to the Epic (1983), He was Editor, with Marco Muller, of L’Avventurose Storie del Cinema Indiano (2 vols., in Italian) (Mostra Internazionale del Nuovo Cinema, 1985); was Editor, with Rani Burra, of Looking Back, 1896–1960 (Directorate of Film Festivals/Film India Retrospective of Indian Cinema, 1981); was Editor, The Sad and Glad of Kishore Kumar (Research Centre for Cinema Studies, 1988), and was Editor, with Amrit Gangar, of Ghatak: Arguments/Stories (Screen Unit/Research Centre for Cinema Studies, 1987). He was co-curator, with Geeta Kapur, of the exhibition Bombay/Mumbai 1992-2001, part of the Tate Modern Century Cities show. He is currently coordinating the CSCS Media Archive and is working on a collection of essays titled Who’s Looking? His interests are in cinema, contemporary art, cultural studies and digital archiving.
